Phillies spoil Scherzer’s historic night with 7-4 win over Blue Jays

TORONTO — The Philadelphia Phillies homered three times and held off a late push from Toronto as they defeated the Blue Jays 7-4 on Wednesday at Rogers Centre.

Alec Bohm’s three-run home run in the third inning put the Phillies up 4-0. Kyle Schwarber extended the lead in the fourth with a two-run home run.

The Blue Jays scored three runs in the seventh inning off a bases-loaded walk and a pair of sacrifice flies, but the rally would fall short as the Phillies (37-31) won their third straight series. The loss ended Toronto’s (33-36) streak of series victories at home at three.

Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo (5-4) allowed one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings with four walks and eight strikeouts. Jonathan Bowlan, Chase Shugart, Brad Keller and José Alvarado pitched in relief. Jhoan Duran earned his 17th save.

Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer (1-4) returned from a stint on the injured list and recorded his 3,500th career strikeout on the first batter he faced. But the 41-year-old lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
