Canada’s Auger-Aliassime into quarterfinals of wide-open men’s French Open field

PARIS — Félix Auger-Aliassime continued to take advantage of a wide-open draw at the French Open on Monday as he advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 7-5, 6-1 fourth-round win over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo.

Auger-Aliassime, seeded fourth in the men’s draw, fired 17 aces despite playing on the deadening red clay of Roland Garros.

The 25-year-old from Montreal broke Tabilo five times on six chances, including three times as part of a six-game winning streak in the final set. He saved all three break points he faced.

Auger-Aliassime improved his career record to 2-0 against Tabilo, who was born and raised in Toronto before moving to his parents’ homeland of Chile.

Early upsets to top seed Jannik Sinner, fifth seed Ben Shelton and sixth seed Daniil Medvedev have opened up Auger-Alassime’s half of the draw, and the Canadian star has taken advantage. But he does face a potentially dangerous opponent in the quarterfinals in Italy’s Flavio Cobolli.

Cobolli has defeated Auger-Aliassime in both of their previous meetings, including the second round of the 2024 National Bank Open. The Italian has posted wins over Medvedev and Alexander Zverev this clay season and appeared in the final of the BMW Open, where he lost to Shelton.

Should Auger-Aliassime advance to the semifinals, his potential opponents would include 19th seed Frances Tiafoe of the United States, No. 105 Matteo Berrettini — a former world No. 6 — and No. 104 Matteo Arnaldi.

Zverev, the only active player seeded higher than Auger-Aliassime at No. 2, is a potential final opponent.

While not in Auger-Aliassime’s half of the draw, the field at Roland Garros also opened up with the third-round defeat of third seed Novak Djokovic. The draw is also missing Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz, who missed the clay-court Grand Slam with a wrist injury.

Earlier, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani advanced to the women’s doubles quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Norway’s Ulrikke Eikeri and Quinn Gleason of the United States.

Dabrowski and Stefani won 80 per cent of first-serve points and converted four of eight break points.

Their final break put them up 5-4 in the second set before they held serve to clinch the win.

It was the second win for Dabrowski and Stefani over Eikeri and Gleason in as many months. Dabrowski and Stefani also beat them May 23 in the final of the Strasbourg International.

Dabrowski and Stefani, seeded fourth, will next face the 11th-seeded pair of Laura Siegemund of Germany and Vera Zvonareva of Russia.
