WATCH: Prince Albert helps raise nearly $40K for Alzheimer’s research and programs

More than a dozen people of various ages and backgrounds gathered at Prince Albert’s Kinsmen Park on Saturday for a single purpose.

They were there to raise awareness and money for Alzheimer’s research and programs.

The annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s raised nearly $40,000 locally, including about $25,000 from the Malcolm Jenkins Family Foundation.

First Link co-ordinator Laura Erickson Lumb told paNOW she speaks with about 100 people each month.

“If we calculate that over a year, there’s about 1,200 people impacted by dementia or Alzheimer’s. Some are just looking for information, and some aren’t sure what the next steps look like,” she said.

Erickson explained dementia is one of those diseases that changes people’s perceptions, and families are often intimidated by it. One of the things workers then try to do, she said, is make sure people know they can live well with dementia with support.

“Information is power, so the more information you have, the easier it becomes to navigate those decisions.”

In Prince Albert, there is a telephone support group for people who cannot leave their homes and an in-person group that meets monthly at Abbeyfield House. Registration information is available through the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan website

Erickson said the support groups help people navigate the journey and connect with others who have already gone through the steps they are just beginning or will face down the road.

Tina Gamble was walking in honour of her late father, who passed away in 2023.

“It was really hard to see how strong my dad was and how much of a hard worker he was, and then have him forget who I was,” she said.

Gamble said she believes events like Saturday’s are helpful and bring families one step closer to a cure.

Saturday’s event was one of many similar fundraisers that were held across the province and the country.
