Lasting Legacy

Annual Aces softball tournament continues to honour former player ten years after her passing

Hundreds of youth softball players are descending on Prince Albert this weekend for the 6th annual Shaye Amundson Memorial Tournament.

The Prince Albert Aces will welcome 22 other teams from across four age divisions with games beginning on Friday morning. Clubs are coming from all over the province including Melfort, Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, and Maidstone, just to name a few.

Amy Fiddler is the head coordinator of the tournament and said this weekend is one of the most important for Prince Albert Minor Softball.

“This is something that we look forward to as an organization every year. [Shaye] was a very important part of the association, so it’s really nice to honour her every year and have her parents come out.”

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Shaye Amundson‘s passing. She died in a car accident just two weeks after she graduated from Debden School. She was an avid player with the Aces in her career, winning several provincial medals while also representing Prince Albert on the Western and National stages. She was just 18 years old.

A decade later, Fiddler said the organization continues to recognize and honour her legacy, with efforts like Shaye Amundson Field in Prime Minister’s Park, the Shaye Amundson Memorial Scholarship, and by retiring her number ‘2’ across all age divisions within Prince Albert Minor Softball.

“We make sure that we let our girls know what this tournament is all about and what she was all about, what kind of teammate she was, and [we] just want to keep her name alive.”

She continued that all of the Aces players in the tournament will gather for a photo on Friday under the sign that proudly displays Amundson’s name next to her diamond.

“It’s a really nice way to recognize Shaye’s family.”

Each division will play at their own diamonds over the course of the weekend, with the U11’s at Shaye Amundson Field, the U13’s at Optimist Field, the U15’s at Kinsmen Field, and the U17’s at the main diamond at Rotary Field.

The first pitch of the tournament will be thrown on Friday morning at 10 a.m. when the U11 Aces (Boyer) takes on the Saskatoon Lazers. The first games for the other four Aces teams on Friday will be as follows:

  • U11 Aces (Michalchuk) vs Saskatoon Raiders – 12 p.m. @ Shaye Amundson
  • U13 Aces vs Melfort Spirit – 2 p.m. @ Optimist Field
  • U15 Aces vs Twin City Angels – 1 p.m. @ Kinsmen Field
  • U17 Aces vs Valley Vipers – 1 p.m. @ Rotary Field

Champions will be crowned on Sunday afternoon.
