Emma Lake death case committed for trial

May 10, 2026 | 8:01 AM

A man alleged responsible for a fatal crash in the Emma Lake area over four years ago, has been committed to stand trial at Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert.

Raven Bird’s preliminary inquiry hearing concluded Friday at provincial court with the presiding judge determining the Crown’s evidence was strong enough to move the case forward. Both the evidence heard and the judge’s reasons for committal are protected by a publication ban.

Trial dates will be determined at a future pre-trial hearing, and the next sitting is on May 22.

In relation to the two vehicle crash in April 2022 that killed 64-year-old Keith Herzog, Bird was charged with dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop after the scene of a collision causing death, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 (a 2001 GMC Sierra truck).

Bird was arrested in July 2025 after an alleged break-in attempt in Saskatoon.

As per discussion heard when he appeared in court the next day, forensic evidence left at the scene of the crash had been connected to Bird.

Keith’s wife Diane Herzog told paNOW it has been a long four years waiting for someone to be brought to justice and held accountable for the pain caused to the family.

“No words could explain the deep hurt that comes with missing that core of your family. He is so missed,” she said.

Herzog stated she went to the preliminary inquiry hearing, she was really unsure what would happen.

“Listening to the evidence is very emotionally draining. However, today brought forward a few more pieces that fit. When the judge came down with her decision, I can’t explain my feelings of relief and knowing that it’s that much closer to getting this person in jail for what he has done. I know there is more persons involved.”
