The owner of a stolen vehicle that was involved in a fiery crash in Saskatoon, says it was an anniversary gift.

The Prince Albert woman agreed to share her story with paNOW on the condition of anonymity.

She stated she and her husband recently celebrated their 32nd anniversary and she had owned the Dodge Durango for one month.

“We never ever owned brand new and he surprised me,” she said about her husband.

On May 4, they had just come home from the Edmonton Enoch Powwow and arrived in Prince Albert around 6p.m. The vehicle that was left in a parking stall was stolen later that night and the woman said the keys were not left inside it.

“Tuesday morning when we went to get the kids to school, it was gone,” she said.

On May 5, at around 8:10 a.m., Saskatoon police were called to the area of Idylwyld Drive near 58th Street West after it was reported that the Dodge Durango was driving erratically.

Updates from the Corman Park Police Service outlined the vehicle was travelling on Highway 11 into the city..

While responding, further updates outlined that the Durango had collided with a Ford Transit van south of the highway 16 overpass on Idylwyld Drive. The van subsequently caught fire and the driver, an 82-year-old man, was transported to hospital with critical injuries.
