Three locals among selections in 2026 WHL Prospects Draft

The 2026 WHL Prospects Draft saw the next generation of stars picked one by one by the league’s 23 member teams.

Of those selected in the draft, include a handful of locals from the Prince Albert area, including members of this past season’s provincial winning U15 AA Prince Albert Venice House Pirates team.  

Round 2, Pick 25: RW Caleb Philp, Prince Albert Pirates U15 AA – Shellbrook, Sask. 

Caleb Philp was the first local player to hear their named called in the draft. The Swift Current Broncos used their third pick to obtain Philp. 

The Shellbrook native ranked fourth in league scoring with the Pirates this season, scoring 28 goals and 45 assists in just 27 regular season games. He was as much of a force in the playoffs, finishing second in team scoring with 22 points (11G-11A) in eight games en route to a provincial championship, the first for the team since 2011. 

Philp also appeared in four games for the Prince Albert Mintos U18 AAA earlier in the year, where he scored twice and added an assist. He signed with the team back in February and will be a full-time member of the Mintos this upcoming season. 

Round 4, Pick 78: LD Luke Trann, Prince Albert Pirates U15 AA – Prince Albert, Sask. 

Luke Trann was the second Pirate to be selected in the draft, heading to the Kelowna Rockets in round four. 

The 6’1”, 165lb defenceman was the leading point getter from the blueline for P.A. this season, notching seven goals and 27 assists in 22 appearances. The 35-point regular season ranked seventh among defencemen across the Sask. U15 AA division, where he also scored six assists during the Pirates’ provincial run. 

Trann will be taking his talents south next season, as he signed on with the Yorkton Kinsmen Maulers in U18 AAA. 

Round 5, Pick 115: LW Lachlan Vandall, Prince Albert Pirates U15 AA – Prince Albert, Sask. 

The final pick of the fifth round was used by the Prince George Cougars to acquire the third and final P.A. Pirate in Lachlan Vandall. 

Vandall was third in team scoring for the U15 AA Pirates in the regular season, where he posted 21 goals and 35 assists in 26 games. His efforts placed him 13th across the entire league, while his 16 playoff points (5G-11A) ranked him fourth. 

Like Philp, Vandall is signed onto the Prince Albert Mintos for next season and has already appeared with the team. In seven outings with the Green and Gold, Vandall managed two goals and two assists.

A handful of other northern Saskatchewan talents were also taken during the draft.

Round 4, Pick 72 (Red Deer Rebels): LD Parker Bleich – Nipawin, Sask. 

2025/26 stats with North East Wolfpack U15 AA: 12 goals, 18 assists, 48 PIM in 27 games 

Next season: signed to Tisdale Trojans U18 AAA 

Round 5, Pick 109 (Portland Winterhawks): C Kacy Turberfield – Meadow Lake, Sask. 

2025/26 stats with North West Stars U15 AA: 21 goals, 15 assists, 69 PIM in 22 games 

Next season: signed to Battlefords Stars U18 AAA  

Round 6, Pick 120 (Lethbridge Hurricanes): RD Kai Genereaux – Meadow Lake, Sask. 

2025/26 stats with Calgary Edge School U15 Prep: 4 goals, 9 assists, 30 PIM in 30 games 

Next season: signed to Moose Jaw Warriors U18 AAA 

Round 9, Pick 192 (Regina Pats): C Klay Weber – Edam, Sask. 

2025/26 stats with North West Stars U15 AA: 21 goals, 24 assists, 34 PIM in 27 games 

Next season: signed to Battlefords Stars U18 AAA

Round 9, Pick 207 (Regina Pats): RW Alex Kowalyk – Hudson Bay, Sask. 

2025/26 stats with North West Stars U15 AA: 23 goals, 29 assists, 46 PIM in 27 games 

Next season: signed to Battlefords Stars U18 AAA
