If the high price of oil remains consistent, Warrington said that could mean an extra $600 million to $700 million in oil revenue for the province.  

“The people of Saskatchewan need help getting to work, taking their kids to school, doing everything that families and small farmers and small businesses need to do right now, and it’s time for this government to take affordability seriously.” 

Warrington maintained that some of those extra dollars from higher oil revenues could be passed on to Saskatchewan residents.  

Thus far, the provincial government has rejected the NDP’s plea to pause gas taxes, saying that they put in affordability measures in their budget passed in March. Warrington said all those promises were made prior to the price of gas skyrocketing, and he said the NDP is looking for the government to do more to react to situations that are out of their control. 

Much of the reason for the increase in gas prices can be traced to the conflict in the Middle East between the United States, Israel, and Iran, with the Strait of Hormuz being closed periodically during that time.  

“[The provincial government has] the opportunity to give people relief right now, and that’s what we’re asking for.” 

Warrington said U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested the conflict in the Middle East could go on until Labour Day, and that is why the federal government has insinuated the federal gas tax pause will last until then.  

“We could do the same thing here.” 

Should the provincial government reverse course, Warrington said that would bring a 15-cent drop in gas prices. While Warrington said it would still be a far cry from where it was months ago, a pause in provincial gas taxes would still help Saskatchewan people. 

“All of the SaskParty MLAs need to do their part, to go to their caucus meeting in the coming weeks – in the coming days – and suggest that we should be doing this,” maintained Warrington. “People of Saskatchewan need to move around in their vehicles, and it’s becoming harder and harder for people like MLA Todd Goudy to justify not doing something today.” 

Goudy’s office was closed at the time of Warrington’s press conference.
