NDP critic visits Melfort to lobby for provincial gas tax pause
The opposition NDP continues to lobby the SaskParty government to put a pause on the provincial gas tax.
Shadow Minister for Highways and SGI Darcy Warrington was in Melfort on Thursday in front of MLA Todd Goudy’s office to discuss the need for the gas tax to be put on hold, especially amid the soaring gas prices across Saskatchewan. Prices in Saskatoon and Regina are nearing $2 per litre, with Melfort and Prince Albert at about $1.60/L. Just three months ago, those prices were at about $1.10/L.
“We have an affordability crisis in the province of Saskatchewan,” Warrington told northeastNOW.
He said people are struggling with the cost of groceries, power bills, and more, and gas prices are emptying wallets across the province. The current price of gas would have been even higher, Warrington said, had the federal government not paused the 10-cent federal gas tax until Labour Day.
