Bears get council approval to move into Leisure Centre

The Prince Albert Northern Bears did not have to work hard to convince councillors at city hall to grant their wish to have a dressing room dedicated for their use at the new Lake Country Leisure Centre.

Club board member Al Dyer made his pitch at Monday’s executive committee meeting but received no opposition from council or staff.

“We’re happy to meet at any time to discuss his further, and I should mention at this point that we have had some very positive discussions, even today, with the recreation director about moving this forward. So, we’re very positive that we can make this work,” Dyer said.

Several councillors voiced their support and the vote to proceed was unanimous.

Coun. Dawn Kilmer said she was supportive as a temporary measure because council still has other plans in the works as she made the motion to have staff move forward with the request.

“The reason that I say temporary home is the Event Centre, we’re working hard to get it, very hard because our community deserves the best,” she said.

The plan has been for some time that the Bears would have a dedicated dressing room in the event centre that is not yet built. The federal government has committed funding but the city is awaiting other sources, such as the province, before proceeding.

Kilmer suggested administration report back by July on moving the Bears but Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture, Jody Boulet, said sooner is actually better and they have a better idea after one season of the Leisure Centre how scheduling will work.

“I don’t mind the July 20 city council meeting more for us to work towards a formal agreement to have that approved from council, but what we are sensitive to is Al (Dyer) and the Bears requirement to move sooner than that with respect to scheduling,” he said.

“This also helps our staff and the Art Hauser.”

The team will likely make the change within weeks after some modifications to their new dressing room in the Leisure Centre.

They will work to make the changes portable to their next room in the Event Centre, once that building goes ahead.
