Prairie Oasis: Ready to help northern gardeners grow

After years of working in landscaping and landscaping construction around Prince Albert, Cory Thomas decided it was time to grow something of his own.

That idea took root last spring with the opening of Prairie Oasis Landscape & Garden Centre Inc., located about 12 kilometres west of Spruce Home along Highway 355. Now heading into its second season, the locally owned business is carving out a niche by focusing on prairie-hardy plants and personalized expertise.

“Always loved plants and eventually made the crossover into a garden centre because PA is lacking a garden centre or a good garden centre other than the big box stores.” said Thomas.

The business is also a family venture. Thomas partnered with his mother who brings decades of experience on the business side.

“She’s got 30, 40 years of business management under her belt and she’s a really good partner to work with,” he said. “We all have a love for plants and landscaping and design.”

The garden centre focuses on stocking plants suited to Saskatchewan’s climate, working primarily with prairie-based suppliers.

“Our main plant suppliers are all on the prairies—Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan,” Thomas said. “Everything being grown on the prairies, they are used to our winters and our climate. They don’t have a shock to their system.”

He added the business is selective in what it carries.

“We also don’t carry anything that is incredibly weedy or invasive… just trying to be a good steward of the land.”

In addition to annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs, Prairie Oasis carries vegetables, herbs and tropical houseplants, along with a wide range of landscaping supplies, décor and tools.

“We’ve got annual plants, tropical house plants, perennials that are for our planting zone, trees and shrubs… quite a wide assortment of stuff,” Thomas said.

Customers looking for more than just plants can also tap into the team’s experience.

“We do offer landscape design, helping with placement of plants, plant consultation,” he said. “All of our staff combined, I think we’ve got about 60 years of plant knowledge. We’re going to make sure people get the right plants for the right situation.”

The business continues to grow in its second year, with a new dedicated garden centre building nearing completion after a winter of construction. Opening day is planned for May 9.

“It is about 90 per cent complete,” Thomas said.

The business has also launched an online store.

“People can actually check real-time availability and just about all of our inventory has pictures, so people can see what they actually are,” he said.

Prairie Oasis also offers delivery to Prince Albert twice a week.

For Thomas, keeping the business rooted in the community is just as important as what’s on the shelves. And, if there is something specific customers are looking for, they’ll do their best to bring it in for them.

“We’re local and try to support local. We try and source as much Canadian and local content as possible,” he said, noting the centre also partners with local artists and creators.

After a lifelong connection to gardening, Thomas said working in the industry reminds him of good family memories with his mother and grandmother.

Now, he hopes Prairie Oasis Landscape & Garden Centre can help others create a few of their own.
