Golf Season looming

Cooke Municipal playing waiting game as opening date still to be determined

The opening date for Cooke Municipal Golf Course will not be anytime soon.

Like many other courses in the area, the province’s fourth oldest golf club is at the mercy of mother nature this season as a series of late season snowstorms have piled on the powder, pushing back their opening to later and later dates.

Executive professional for the course Darcy Myers told paNOW that once the snow finally leaves for good, it’ll be all hands on deck to get the course mid-season conditions.

“There hasn’t been much done with the amount of snow that we have. Just waiting for levels to go down a little bit before we can start pushing some greens off and kind of assessing the situation. A lot of the prep work, for tournaments and whatnot has been completed already. It’s just a matter of getting Mother Nature on our side here and opening up the course.”

With how things are looking now, Myers said that their start date is nearing one of the latest he’s ever seen with the club, adding their opening weekend could coincide with their first tournament of the year.

“Our Northern Team Championship is scheduled for May long weekend, which could be our potential opening weekend. The tournament is sold out with 144 golfers coming from all over the province.”

He continued that the course will see four other tournaments be played at Cooke Municipal throughout the summer, including the Ladies Northern from June 6-7, the 105th Men’s Northern Amateur Golf Championship from Aug. 1-3, the Sr. Men’s Northern from Aug. 19-20, and the Left/Right Teams tournament from Sept. 12-13.

Speaking to the delayed start to the season, Myers said the club is anticipating another busy year once tee-time bookings open.

“It’s been a really long winter, and people are really anxious to get out there.”
