City starts saving for hospital gear up with $6 million in building permit fees

The City of Prince Albert has begun saving for what it expects will be a hefty bill to fit up the Victoria Hospital expansion.

The first $6 million was allocated from the fees charged to the province for building permits for the hospital.

“The knowledge that the SHA will be looking to Boreal (Health Care Foundation) for $40 million and the municipalities for $30 million is pretty much public information,” said Mayor Bill Powalinsky.

“What we don’t know is how that break out is going to be applied.”

Hospital users (the city and surrounding municipalities) and the Boreal Health Care Foundation have known for some time that they will need to pay for a portion of the equipment and furniture for the expansion.

Exactly how much the city will be responsible for is still being negotiated. Discussions continue between Prince Albert, other governments and Saskatchewan Health Authority.

The city does know that 69 new rooms will need beds and an MRI machine will be installed along with expanded services.

Improvements include a new emergency department, medical imaging and diagnostic cardiology, perioperative services, a mother /baby unit and special care nursery, ICU/HAU, medical surgical inpatient, a pediatric unit and adult mental health.

On Monday, city council voted in favour of creating a hospital fit up reserve, where money will be put aside in anticipation of the coming bill.

The Boreal Health Care Foundation has been fundraising for months and has a website dedicated to the campaign, called Equip the Vic.
