Man responsible for setting grass fire receives three-month sentence

On Sept 3, 2025, at around 2:30 p.m., Prince Albert RCMP and Buckland Fire and Rescue responded to an area along Highway 2, roughly five kilometers north of the city, for a report of a grass fire.

However, when crews arrived there was nothing showing.

Bird later admitted to starting a fire but the size of the blaze remains unclear.

There was no visible damage to any property and no injuries reported.

Monday’s sentence represented a joint submission from lawyers and was accepted by Judge Wiebe.

Crown Prosecutor Kristen Hubbard stated Bird has 30 prior convictions for property related offences, including two for arson.

Bird’s legal aid lawyer Ian Goldberg explained Bird suffers from a cognitive disability and is receiving treatment for addictions.

Bird’s actual time in custody amounted to over 170 days.
