Prince Albert woman receives national recognition

Prince Albert’s Janice Henry says she is humbled and thrilled.

She is one of three women receiving the Order of Gabriel Dumont Silver Medal, which honours individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Métis community. In the past, it has been presented to community leaders, activists, artists, and businesspeople.

“It means so much to me, simply because it’s recognition from my peers and from the communities that I am doing the right things in my attempts to work and support the communities,” she told paNOW.

Henry’s nearly four-decade-long career in human resources included crisis intervention, social work, homelessness coordination and culturally grounded community service delivery.

Reflecting back on her career, she said she feels she made a positive difference, but added she was fortunate to be part of a great team.

“So everything I’ve done, my achievements aren’t only mine own, they are the achievements of the people who have worked alongside me and who have supported me through my life journey,” she said.

As a Métis leader, Henry served as President of Métis Women of Saskatchewan, has been on the executive board of the Métis National Council of Women, and, more recently, as president of the Northern Prairie Indigenous Peoples Collective, all while she championed empowerment and inspired future generations.

Henry acknowledged she is very proud of her Métis ancestry. While noting it was her father who taught cultural education, she added Métis women are known for being very strong and represent the foundation of their families.

“When Métis women come together, beautiful things happen, and we make our communities healthier,” she said.

While retired now from her career, Henry continues to operate a private home for individuals with intellectual, mental health and physical disabilities. She said she takes great satisfaction from the fact she can provide a home for individuals who may not otherwise have one.

Each year, the Gabriel Dumont Institute receives nominations from across the country, and Henry was among three recipients of the silver medal. The other recipients were Angela Bishop (Saskatoon, SK) and Shirley Isbister (Saskatoon, SK).

The Order of Gabriel Dumont Gold Medal recognizes a lifetime of great distinction and service to the Métis. This year’s recipients were Jennine Krauchi (Winnipeg, MB) and Joseph Welsh (Lebret, SK).
