Big cash prizes to be won at first annual Patuanak Memorial Hockey Cup

Indigenous hockey teams from across the Prairies are descending on Prince Albert this weekend for a first of its kind hockey tournament for English River First Nation.

The first annual Patuanak Memorial Hockey Cup is set to welcome 28 teams to compete for a slice of the $100,000 prize pool with $50,000 for first, $30,000 for second, and $10,000 each for third and fourth.

Unlike Big River First Nation’s 3rd annual Spring Classic Hockey Tournament held in P.A. two weeks ago, this weekend’s championship will be a rec tournament, meaning no body contact is allowed. Despite this, the winners of the Big River tournament, Round Lake Bears, will be competing this weekend with much of the same roster.

The Bears also won the $30,000 grand prize at the Third Annual Thunder Classic at Thunderchild First Nation this past weekend.

With it being a rec tournament, there is still tons of talent to watch on the ice, including recent WHL grad Pavel McKenzie (Moose Jaw Warriors) with the Cumberland Cree, USports athlete Keaton Dowhaniuk (Grant MacEwan Univ.) with the Pelican Raiders, and pros like Matthew Henry (Tulsa Oilers, ECHL) playing for the Moosomin Warriors and Kishaun Gervais (Kalamazoo Wings, ECHL) with the Round Lake Bears. Former Prince Albert Raider Dallyn Peekeekoot will also be suiting up this weekend for the Sandy Lake Chiefs.

The first annual Patuanak Memorial Hockey Cup will begin on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. between the Whitefish Flyers and Muskoday Bisons, and a champion will be crowned on Sunday. All games on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will be played at the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre while Sunday’s games will be at the Art Hauser Centre.
