Old Man Winter is going out with a bang.

An estimated 15 to 20 cm. of snow was forecasted for the Prince Albert and Melfort areas on Tuesday, and 5 to 10 cm. for North Battleford, but for many residents who were having difficulty navigating roads and even finding their way to their front doors, it felt like a lot more.

As of 10p.m., a number of travel advisories were issued and the general message relayed by emergency responders was for people to stay home.

By 9p.m., the highway between Melfort and Tisdale was closed.

Highways south and west of Prince Albert were affected by very poor visibility, snow drifts and icy sections.

According to one local social media group page, as many as nine vehicles were spotted in the ditch between Holbein and Shellbrook.

Highways in the North Battleford area were equally treacherous and a social media post by the RM of North Battleford’s Volunteer Fire Dept. reminded drivers that when a highway is listed as closed, it is not a suggestion.

“It is a warning based on real, dangerous conditions. Choosing to travel in these conditions is not just a personal risk, it puts everyone at risk — including other drivers and the first responders who will be called when something goes wrong,” they said.

“Every time someone ignores these advisories, it increases the chance of collisions, stranded motorists, and emergency crews being put into hazardous situations to help.”

The heavy snow was expected to taper off overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

According to a late night news release from the City of Prince Albert, due to the continuing snowstorm, the city’s transit will begin operating later in the morning on Wednesday. The Core Express will not be in operation.

All other routes will begin operating at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

The city encouraged residents to check Prince Albert Transit for up-to-date information on transit routes and schedules.
