After taking a year off to recover from injury, Prince Albert’s Suhail Mondair is celebrating a third place finish at a national grappling competition.

The 23-year-old who trains out of North Wake Martial Arts attended last weekend’s ADCC Calgary Open.

Competing in a 60 kilogram beginner division, he had four matches and won three by submission. Reflecting on the match he lost, Mondair admitted he was taking risks and gave up an ankle which his opponent capitalized on and scored the win with an ankle lock.

“I was quite upset about it because I would’ve been gone straight to finals after that and had a good chance at the gold, but I had to overcome that because I had to compete in two extra matches,” he explained.

Mondair would go on to the bronze medal match and won with a Kimura lock.

While he has three years experience training jiu-jitsu, Mondair also wrestled when he was a teenager and one week prior to travelling to Calgary, competed in Saskatoon which he described as a good experience, that helped him prepare him emotionally and physically for the next level of competition he was going to face in Calgary.

“I felt confident going into it just because I had experienced tough competition in Saskatoon and that helped boost my performance in Calgary essentially,” he said.

In total there were 659 registered athletes at the event in Calgary and they came from all corners of the country. Mondair said the experience was definitely very positive, adding the biggest highlight was meeting MMA fighters from Edmonton, B.C. and Ontario, and some world class grapplers.

“The atmosphere was just unreal. It was packed to the brim. There were there was no space to set foot in there for the whole day and it was the first for me to be in that kind of environment where there was so much going on,” he explained. “I said it was a growing experience and I wish to do better in the next one for our gym and make Saskatchewan proud.”
