Prince Albert Venice House Pirates capture provincial title

For the first time since 2011, the local U15 AA boys’ hockey team holds the title of provincial league champion.  

The Venice House Pirates won in convincing fashion over the south division leaders Engelheim Prairie Storm by a score of 8-2 Thursday night in front of a very packed, very loud arena in the Lake Country Coop Leisure Centre.  

“There’s a lot of steps you have to take to get to the point where you actually start to see that there’s a chance at winning it, and we started playing our best hockey at the right time… when the kids started to believe that they’d be there and it all came together at the right time, so it’s awesome,” said head coach Tyson Dallman.

Kaden Kohle opened the scoring early for the Pirates during a power play opportunity at the 14:19 mark of the first period. Beckett Casavant scored a few minutes later to put the home team up by 2 heading into the first intermission.

Jordan Labelle added electricity to the already boisterous crowd when he scored twice in the second period, just one minute apart, to put the Pirates up by 4. The Storm managed to get on the scoreboard once before the end of the middle frame, but Pryce Schrader brought the Pirates’ momentum right back off the start of the third period when the defenceman found a shooting lane to put the puck past the Storm’s Liam Rogers. Kohle, Labelle and Casavant all saw their second goals of the night in the final frame. 

Liam Bergen had a stellar performance between the pipes making saves on 43 of 45 shots on net, ending the night with a .956 save per centage.  

The Pirates ended the regular season with a record of 24-1-2 (Wins-Losses-Overtime Losses). Caleb Philp, Labelle and Lachlan Vandall led the team in scoring, but Dallman said the skill level amongst the whole team left him with a number of options. 

“It’s nice to have the ability to put guys in different situations you think they’ll succeed in, but finding the right mix of who plays with who and when they play, how much they play, where they play…there’s always some small tweaks, but when you have the ability to pretty much put out any kid that you want and you know that they can help you contribute…yeah, it’s special.”

Making the provincial title even more special for Dallman is the fact that he coached the team to a championship alongside his father, Rod Dallman.  

“This being my last year of coaching, it’s been very special to be able to coach with my son on the bench and going through all these types of things. Its been a very rewarding experience and I don’t think that we’ll ever forget it,” said Rod. 

The father and son coaching duo had the support of assistant coach Jason Duret and trainer James Palmer. 

Thursday night’s provincial championship win completed a perfect run through the SHAAL U15 AA playoffs for the Pirates. Dallman said he anticipates more success for his players down the road. 

“They’re such a good group of kids. Whatever they end up doing, they’re going to have success in what they find, whether it’s hockey or professional lives. I hope that we’ve bulit a bond that when I see them in 10 or 15 years….one thing we did say is you’ll never forget the guys that you win with, and hopefully I get to be a part of that.” 

The U13 AA Family Pizza Foxes won their provincial title earlier this week in Regina, but the Pirates became the first Prince Albert team to win a provincial championship on home ice in the city’s new rink. The echo of their victorious cheers and chants, now a part of the building’s history.  

“It’s a heave ho, hi ho, coming into town, stealing wins and dreams from all the other teams…it’s a heave ho, hi ho, teams lock your doors when you see the P.A. Pirates on your city shores.”
