Shellbrook wins first TRHL title after double overtime triumph in Game 5

Third time is the charm for the Shellbrook Elks.

Shellbrook crowned themselves champions of the Twin Rivers Hockey League (TRHL) for the first time in club history on Saturday after downing the Rosthern Wheat Kings 3-2 in the best-of-five finals, taking Game 5 in double overtime 4-3 in Rosthern.

Shellbrook was trailing 3-2 late in the third period of Game 5, before a Rosthern penalty gave them some hope with less than seven minutes to play. That proved to be costly as Jody Blais found the back of the net for the Elks to tie it and force overtime.

After the first OT period solved nothing, a second was needed to determine a winner, and with just under six minutes to go, Peyton Kachur’s shot from the top of the circle squeaked by Nathan Dancy to win it for the Elks.

The championship run was the first successful one that the Elks have had since joining the league in 2019 and their first banner since winning the Sask Prairie Hockey League (SaskPHL) in 2016.

The first time Shellbrook made the finals was in 2020 when they met Birch Hills. However, because of the pandemic, the finals were forced to cancel after just one game, which saw the Blackhawks prevail 5-3. They would make a run at the championship again in 2022, facing Birch Hills once more, but this time the Elks were swept in three straight games.

Meanwhile, this was Rosthern’s fifth kick at the can for a chance at the title, and their fifth consecutive finals loss. The Wheaties were a part of the first three TRHL championships from 2017-19 where they dropped all three series by a 3-1 score, losing to St. Louis, Birch Hills, and Warman in that order. Prior to 2026, their most recent title run was in 2024 where they lost in five games to Birch Hills.

Cole Dupperreault led the scoring for the Elks in the playoffs with 22 points, followed by Kaiden Couture with 14, Kachur and Blais with 12, and Matthew Flodell with 11, while four other were tied with 10 each. Alex Bell was the go to guy in net for Shellbrook, where he posted a 7-1-2 (W-L-OTL) record to pair with a 3.28 goals against average (GAA) and a .914 save percentage (SV%).
