Man responsible for fatal crash lands back in jail after breach

Less than a week after receiving a community based sentence for his role in a high speed crash, Bernard McCallum has breached one of his conditions and has been arrested.

The 24-year-old appeared Monday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court and was remanded to Tuesday afternoon at Court of King’s Bench.

According to court records, it was a curfew-related breach. For the first nine months of the 18 month order, McCallum was to be under a 24-hour curfew.

The crash that occurred in Prince Albert in June, 2024, resulted in the death of Iris Prokopie.

While turning left at 22nd Street and Sixth Avenue East, Prokopie’s sedan was struck at a high rate of speed by a northbound truck.

Both vehicles had a green light.

The impact sent the smaller vehicle onto the curb of a nearby gas station. About a week and a half later, 83-year-old Prokopie died in hospital.

At the time of the crash, McCallum was sober but was travelling at twice the legal speed limit. He was also the sole occupant of the truck and only had a learner’s permit.

While initially charged with dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence in the operation of a motor vehicle causing death, McCallum, after a significant amount of discussion between lawyers, entered a guilty plea to dangerous driving.

In addition to his conditional sentence order, McCallum is prohibited from driving for a period of two years.
