Blades hand Raiders first shutout of the season

With the Prince Albert Raiders on an eight game win streak and the Saskatoon Blades on a three game losing streak, it had been over a month since the last edition of the Highway 11 rivalry. The standings and streaks were thrown out of the window as the Blades won both special teams battles for a 4-0 win.

The game started off at a wild pace with only four stops in play in the first 13 minutes, and Jonah Sivertson even dropped the gloves with Hunter Laing early on in a spirited fight. Soon the Raiders had the game’s first powerplay, but it was the Blades penalty kill that found momentum. Shortly after the kill was over Dustin Willhoft carried the puck in for the Blades, found David Lewandowski on the right wall, and Lewandowski fired to score the game’s first goal at 15:40.

Then on their first powerplay of the game, the Blades scored again. After a faceoff found the puck pinned to the wall in the corner to the right of Raiders goaltender Steele Bass, three players from each team battled for about 30 seconds before the puck finally came free. Rowan Calvert made a move out from the corner, then took a check as he set up Cooper Williams with a onetimer down low to double the Blades lead at 16:16.

After 1: Raiders 0 – 2 Blades, shots 7-5 Raiders

Again the Raiders had a powerplay in the second, but the Blades penalty kill again managed to survive and take momentum themselves. At the 4:50 mark, a shot was blocked and everyone turned their attention to David Lewandowski as the rebound came to him, and Lewandowski instead passed the puck to Dustin Willhoft waiting in the slot for the onetimer.

The Raiders finally found a bit of momentum near the end of the second period, but a couple posts late would keep the Blades in front.

After 2: Raiders 0 – 3 Blades, shots 8-6 Raiders, 15-11 Raiders overall

The third period was far and away the best period for the Raiders, falling one short of earning the same amount of shots in the third period as they did in the first two periods combined. Evan Gardner made great saves in net for the Blades, and the Raiders even hit a couple posts, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

The Raiders pulled their goaltender with a little over four minutes left, and the Raiders continued to pour on shots, but at 16:44 Hayden Harsanyi hit the empty net to seal the upset win for the Blades.

FINAL: Raiders 0 – 4 Blades, shots 14-5 Raiders, 29-16 Raiders overall

The loss snaps an eight game winning streak for the Raiders, and a three game losing skid for the Blades. It’s also the first time this year the Raiders have been shutout by an opponent.

While Steele Bass had a perfect record of 7-0-0 on the year coming into the game, but this was his first start against a team in a playoff position. Bass only earned a 0.813 save percentage, but two of the goals he allowed were onetimers in tight he had no chance on.
