Province gives update on bridge projects across Saskatchewan

Jan 31, 2026 | 7:00 AM

A range of bridge projects are underway across Saskatchewan, with many in the north and central areas.

Within the $78 million budget for bridges is $2.7 million for a failed culvert on Highway 3 near Prairie River (east of Tisdale), $2 million to replace two bridges on the Leroy access road south of Humboldt, and $9.2 million is the expected cost to replace the Green River bridge on Highway 55 near Meadow Lake.

As is standard, certain bridge work is done over the winter months.

“The bridges that you see in the wintertime generally are smaller span modular bridges where we use precast components that we can fabricate in advance and then we kind of assemble them on site like a Lego set essentially,” said Frederick Willis, Senior Bridge Project Manager for the Ministry of Highways.

Some of the reasons are environmental and others are related to leaving the roads open for farming equipment in spring and fall.

“We have less challenges with fish and with migratory birds and wildlife and they’ve also got less earthwork involved and less fresh concrete components, so we have to worry about the weather being an impact for it.”

A recent cold snap has been a challenge, but contracts are written to allow for inclement weather and the contractor gets to make the call if it’s too cold out for work.

Other major bridge projects underway or concluded are $15.8 million for replacing the Highway 2 bridge over the Montreal River near Air Ronge and just over $11 million was spent to replace two Beaver River bridges on Highway 165 in the Beauval area, north of Meadow Lake.

The biggest project currently on the ministry’s agenda is the second half of a $33 million overpass project to raise the height of Highway 2 over Highway 1 near Moose Jaw.

The northbound bridge was finished in October and crews will go back to do the southbound bridge in April 2026.
