Raiders make it seven in a row in big win over Tigers

Just a week ago, the Prince Albert Raiders walked in to Medicine Hat and stopped a 19-game winning streak for the Tigers in their home barn. On Saturday night, the Raiders were playing their fourth game in five days and on a six game winning streak, and the Tigers were coming off their second straight loss and poised to spoil the Raiders streak.

Both teams were missing big guns with the Tigers playing with five defencemen thanks to the absence of Bryce Pickford and Niilopekka Muhonen, and the Raiders missing the services of both Brayden Dube and Linden Burrett. The Raiders were in survival mode for the middle period, but they dominated the other two for a 5-1 win.

The Raiders opened the scoring at the 10:00 mark when Aiden Oiring entered down the left side, and he sent the puck hard around behind the net and around to the right point for Justice Christensen. He fired on goal, and Owen Corkish tipped it and it bounced for Brandon Gorzynski to knock out of the air and into the back of the net for his first of the night and 21st of the year.

Gorzynski scored his second at the 13:48 mark on the powerplay. Daxon Rudolph carried the puck over his own blueline and dropped it back for Braeden Cootes. He crossed the line side by side with Gorzynski, and they sent a pass back and forth as they crossed centre which opened a lane for Cootes. He skated through the defenceman while Gorzynski crashed the net from the other side, and Cootes found the Gorzynski who tapped it in for his second of the night and 22nd of the year.

After 1: Raiders 2 – 0 Tigers, shots 12-7 Raiders

The Raiders had two powerplays in the first period, but their penalty kill was tested twice in the first five minutes of the second. The penalty kill went well for the Raiders, even setting up an Evan Smith breakaway that was stopped, and it looked the Raiders had the momentum.

Instead, the Raiders seemed to have seemed to tire out early in the second period, and the Tigers started to take over offensively. Instead, Michal Orsulak put together one of his best periods of the year. His glove was tested multiple times during the period but he shut the door over and over again. With each save, Orsulak inspired the rowdy Art Hauser Centre crowd more and more, and the crowd’s energy fed into the players when they went to the dressing room.

After 2: Raiders 2 – 0 Tigers, shots 15-4 Tigers, 22-16 Tigers overall

Gorzynski was the star of the first, Orsulak the star of the second, and the third saw Aiden Oiring take the centre stage. First Daxon Rudolph had a shot blocked and it came to Brandon Gorzynski down in the left side corner. Gorzynski fired a pass to Aiden Oiring at the back door on the right, he onetimed a shot off the pad, it bounced in the air, and Oiring juggled the puck out of the air and swatted it again into the net for his 20th of the season at 3:17.

The Tigers then got their third powerplay of the game, and they only needed 12 seconds to score. At 4:32 fired a shot that Markus Ruck sent a pass down the right side to the corner for Andrew Basha, and he rushed a pass to the crease for Liam Ruck to find the back of the net.

The Raiders took the momentum on a powerplay of their own at 6:57. Alisher Sarkenov worked the puck out of a battle on the right side, back to the right point for Justice Christensen, and he sent a pass to the left side for Brock Cripps. He fired towards the goal looking for a tip, but he hit a defending Tigers stick instead and it found the back of the net for Cripps’ fourth of the year.

At the 16:51 mark, Aiden Oiring added the exclamation point on the night. Again on the powerplay, Braeden Cootes sent the puck to Max Heise who skated in down the left wall. Heise then cut towards the middle and made great move towards the middle and found a passing lane to Aiden Oiring at the back door who tapped it home for his second of the night and 21st of the year.

FINAL: Raiders 5 – 1 Tigers, shots 15-6 Raiders, 31-28 Raiders overall

With the point on the final goal of the night, Max Heise extended his point streak to six games with 5G-6A in that time.

With 27 saves on 28 shots, Michal Orsulak had one of his best games of the year with a 0.964 save percentage on the night.

The Raiders and Tigers tie the season series with two wins in regulation, and in fairly similar fashion. The Tigers got a lucky goal to win the first one 3-2, then dominated the Raiders in the second 7-1. The Raiders got a couple lucky goals in the third game 8-5, then dominated the Tigers in the fourth 5-1. That works out to a score of 16-16 across the four games.

The Raiders have two days off before they head to Moose Jaw on Tuesday for a one off game with the Warriors.
