Weekend preview: Raiders set for back-to-back in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat

After one last home game on Tuesday where the Raiders got back into the win column, the Prince Albert Raiders are on the road this weekend in Alberta.

They’ll first make a stop in Lethbridge to take on the Hurricanes on Friday before heading to Medicine Hat on Saturday for a heavyweight tilt with the Tigers.

Because the Raiders lead the East Division, the Raiders still hold the second place spot in the Eastern Conference despite being one point back of the Edmonton Oil Kings. The Raiders sit three points back of the Medicine Hat Tigers in first in the conference. On the season, the Raiders have a record of 29-6-4 (W-L-OTL) on the year.

The Raiders picked up a 5-2 win over Brandon on Tuesday, which got them back on track after a loss on Saturday to Edmonton, 5-3. Before that, the Raiders had a six game winning streak going where they had scored at least five goals in each win, outscoring their opponents 43-9.

On to special teams where the Raiders have climbed up to the second ranked powerplay in the league at 31.1% on the year. On the penalty kill, the Raiders are right in the middle of the league at 78.1%, good for 11th in the league.

Now for leading scorers, Aiden Oiring sits at the top with 17G-29A-46P on the year. There’s a tie for second in Raiders scoring between Daxon Rudolph with 19G-25A-44P and Riley Boychuk with 9G-35A-44P, and in fourth sits Brandon Gorzynski with 17G-26A-43P.

Scoring streaks:

Finally for goaltenders for the Raiders, Michal Orsulak comes into the weekend with a 0.902 save percentage, a 2.42 goals against average, and a record of 11-4-3 including two shutouts this year.

Steele Bass will likely get a start this weekend as well, he comes in with a record of 5-0-0, a 0.916 save percentage, a 1.60 goals against average, and one shutout on the year.

Friday @ Lethbridge

This will be the third matchup of the season between the Raiders and Hurricanes, and the Raiders lead the season series 2-0. The Raiders won the first meeting in Lethbridge 2-1 on November 5, and the second one in Prince Albert 5-1 on December 13.

The Hurricanes come into the weekend with a record of 12-30-1, with their lone overtime loss coming in a shootout. That leaves them 10th in the Eastern Conference, a full seven points back of Red Deer ahead of them and eight points behind Regina for the final playoff spot.

As of late, the Hurricanes are on a five game losing skid, most recently 4-3 to Red Deer on Wednesday. Before that were a 5-1 loss to Calgary, 7-4 to Medicine Hat, 6-3 to Seattle, 7-4 to Swift Current, and their most recent win 4-3 in overtime over Swift Current back on January 2.

Looking at special teams, the powerplay is sitting tied for 18th in the league with Swift Current at 19%. Their penalty kill is sitting second last in the league at 69.4%, also just ahead of Swift Current.

Leading the scoring for the Hurricanes is 17-year-old rookie Easton Daneault with 7G-22A-29P. Behind him is Nathan Maloney with 4G-23A-27P. Then there’s a tie for third between Kade Duell at 11G-15A-26P and Owen Berge with 10G-16A-26P.

• Kyle Heger: 0G-3A in his last three games
• Owen Berge: 1G-1A in his last two games

In goal for the Hurricanes this year has been the combo of Koen Cleaver and Leif Oaten. Cleaver has the majority of the starts with a record of 7-18-1, a 0.862 save percentage, a 4.94 goals against average, and one shutout on the year.

Oaten on the other hand has a record of 4-11-0 on the year, a 0.873 save percentage, and a 4.26 goalsagainst average.

The Raiders take on the Hurricanes at 8:00 p.m. Saskatchewan time on Friday, with the pregame show starting on 900 CKBI at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday @ Medicine Hat

This is also the third meeting of the season between the Raiders and the Tigers, but it’s the Tigers who lead the season series 2-0. The Tigers won the first meeting 3-2 in Prince Albert on November 29 after bad luck goal ended the game in the final two minutes, and then December 3 the Raiders played their worst game of the season in a 7-1 loss in Medicine Hat.

The Tigers enter the weekend as the top team in the Eastern Conference, just two points back of Everett as the top team in the league. The Tigers record sits at 30-6-5 on the year.

As of late, the Tigers have points in 22 straight games, and they’ve won their last 18 games dating back to a November 21 shootout loss to Red Deer. Most recently the Tigers edged out a 3-2 shootout win in Edmonton on Wednesday, and the two teams meet for a rematch Friday night in Medicine Hat.

On special teams, the Tigers have the third ranked powerplay in the league at 30.9% on the year. Their penalty kill sits fourth in the league, but also has a whopping eight shorthanded goals in the league, tied with Edmonton and Seattle for the most shorthanded goals in the league.

Defenceman Bryce Pickford leads the Tigers in scoring with 32G-28A-60P, and he’s on pace to break a CHL record for goals scored by a defenceman in a single year. Behind him is Liam Ruck with 22G-36A-58P, and in third is Pickford’s defensive partner Jonas Woo with 21G-36A-57P. The other Ruck twin Marks sits fourth with 9G-46A-55P.

With only two goals scored in regulation during Wednesday’s shootout win, a ton of Tigers scoring streaks were snapped. Still, there’s still two active:

• Jonas Woo: 10G-22A in his last 16 games dating back to November 23
• Kade Stengrim: 4G-5A in his last seven games

On to goaltending and Jordan Switzer has been the go-to guy for the Tigers this year. He has a record of 20-3-3 on the year, a 0.902 save percentage, 2.55 goals against average, and one shutout this season.

Behind Switzer is Casey Carter who has a 10-3-2 record, a 0.873 save percentage, 3.34 goals against average, and also one shutout on the year.

The Raiders are set to take on the Tigers Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Saskatchewan time, with the pregame show also starting at 7:30 p.m. Saskatchewan time on 900 CKBI.
