Raiders pour on offence until dam breaks in win over Wheat Kings

After having a six game winning streak snapped in an otherwise great game on Saturday, the Prince Albert Raiders were looking to get back in the win column as they welcomed the Brandon Wheat Kings on Tuesday night. The Prince Albert local Jayden Kraus threatened to steal the game while the Raiders offence overwhelmed the Wheat Kings, but eventually the levies broke and the Raiders took a 5-2 win.

The Wheat Kings got on the board first after the Raiders missed on a 2-on-1 in the offensive zone. After the Wheat Kings corralled the puck, Prabh Bathal flipped the puck out to centre to spring Luke Mistelbacher, and on the breakaway he fired a wrist shot to open the scoring at 6:50.

The Raiders then got a 5-on-3 powerplay halfway through the period, and they only needed six seconds to score. Aiden Oiring won the faceoff with some help from Braeden Cootes. The puck came back to Daxon Rudolph, and Rudolph walked to the top of the slot and ripped his wrist shot off the bar and in for his 19th of the season at 9:51.

After 1: Raiders 1 – 1 Wheat Kings, shots 7-7

The Raiders offence went nuts in the second period, but instead it was Prince Albert local Jayden Kraus taking centre stage in the second period as he made save after save for the Wheat Kings. His best work saw him stop Max Heise on two back-to-back 2-on-1s.

First on the rush with Maddix McCagherty, Heise fed McCagherty perfectly on the back door, but Kraus stretched post to post to make a great save. The Wheat Kings cleared the puck to centre, but Heise stole it and again came in on a 2-on-1 with Jonah Sivertson this time. Heise decided to fire this time instead, but Kraus made the save, and shook his broken mask off to stop play before the third rush could get a shot off.

The Raiders did finally put one by Kraus at 12:42. Maddix McCagherty sent the puck up the left wall for Max Heise, and he entered the offensive zone on the attack. Heise then found a cross ice feed for Linden Burrett sneaking down the right wall. Burrett cut to the net on the backhand, and he got his shot through the fivehole with just enough to cross the line for Burrett’s fifth of the season.

After 2: Raiders 2 – 1 Wheat Kings, shots 20-1 Raiders, 27-8 Raiders overall

The Wheat Kings scored early to tie the game in the third. After the Raiders tried to clear the puck but had it deflected into the air, Grayson Burzynski jumped up to hold the puck in at the blueline, then skate in and fire a wrist shot from the top of the slot to tie the game at 5:29.

From there, the Raiders offence took over again. At 7:35, a relentless forecheck from Braeden Cootes took over the puck in the right side corner of the goaltender. Cootes found Riley Boychuk alone in front of the goal, and Boychuk made a great toe drag around the goaltender’s outstretched pad to end up below the goal line, then Boychuk reached back to tuck the puck inside the post for his ninth of the season.

At the 11:24 mark, Justice Christensen sent a pass out of his zone for Daxon Rudolph, and he sped into the offensive zone down the right wall. Rudolph sent a shot off the pad, generating a rebound for Owen Corkish to clean up for his 11th of the season.

Finally at the 15:16 mark, the Raiders offensive onslaught continued. Christensen again earned an assist for a pass out of his own zone, this time for Brandon Gorzynski at centre ice. He skated over the middle of the blueline, but Gorzynski saw Brayden Dube speeding in behind the defence and fed him down low, and Dube cut in with a power move to the front of the goal and scored his 19th of the season.

FINAL: Raiders 5 – 2 Wheat Kings, shots 17-9 Raiders, 44-17 Raiders overall

With his 11th goal of the season, Owen Corkish now had goals in each of his last three games. Also extending their point streaks were Aiden Oiring with an assist, bringing him up to 4G-10A in his last eight games, and Maddix McCagherty who now has 0G-4A in his last three games.

The Raiders are now off until Friday when they head out on the road for a two game set in Alberta.
