Bass earns first WHL shutout as Raiders fly over Broncos

After outshooting the Swift Current Broncos 47-18 and a 7-1 win on Saturday, the Prince Albert Raiders welcomed the Broncos for the rematch Monday night, and on a particular night that served as a reminder how close the Prince Albert community can be.

With jerseys bearing their nicknames for Super Hero Night, complete with capes during warmups and all, the Raiders played a perfect game to win 8-0 on a night supporting the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, Children’s Miracle Network, and the local Salvation Army.

The Raiders powerplay failed the first time they went out, but after Daxon Rudolph drew a double minor for high-sticking, the powerplay quickly showed how strong they were. At the 9:47 mark, Brandon Gorzynski took the puck from the middle of the blueline, sent the puck to Heise on the right wall, and he quickly found a lane through to Aiden Oiring on the back door left side who tipped home his 15th of the season.

On the second half of the double minor, the second unit scored when Justice Christensen worked the puck off the right wall to Brayden Dube in the middle of the blueline. Dube had an open look at the net, but instead used the threat of his shot to disguise a crisp pass to the tape of Alisher Sarkenov in front. Sarkenov then spun to tuck the puck around the outstretched Joey Rocha for his 8th of the season.

Before the end of the period, Oli Chenier laying a hit on Nathan Gray at centre ice lead to a fight between the two. Chenier landed a few more quality punches, Gray was able to wrestle Chenier down a bit, and they’d be sent to the box. After the fight, the Broncos did start to find some momentum near the end of the period and forced Steele Bass to make a couple solid saves.

After 1: Raiders 2 – 0 Broncos, shots 15-5 Raiders

After going 2/3 on the powerplay in the first, the Raiders went to work 5-on-5 in the second. At 11:11, Maddix McCagherty made a play to hold the line and skated left, leaving the puck for Justice Christensen. He made a fantastic pass through traffic to the bottom of the right circle for Daxon Rudolph, and he skated in with a move to his back hand for Rudolph’s team leading 17th of the season.

Less than a minute later on the same shift, Justice Christensen went to work again. This time he carried the puck over the blueline on the rush and went right through the middle. Christensen dropped the puck back to his left and drove the net hard. Riley Boychuk picked up the puck, passed to the middle for Maddix McCagherty who gave it right back, and Boychuk then found Christensen who had snuck behind the defence to tip in his ninth of the year at 12:09.

After 2: Raiders 4 – 0 Broncos, shots 14-3 Raiders, 29-8 Raiders overall

The Raiders started the third period with back to back powerplays, and after the first one failed, the second one scored again at 2:45. Daxon Rudolph held the puck into the zone on the left point, then found Brayden Dube on the left wall. Dube centred it for Heise in the slot, and he tried to pass to the goal line but his pass was blocked. He picked up the rebound though, and Heise fired for his 15th of the season.

At the 12:25 mark, the Raiders powerplay scored their fourth of the game as Justice Christensen gave the exit pass from his zone to Riley Boychuk. He crossed the blue line through the middle and gave the puck to Jonah Sivertson on the right. With Boychuk crashing the net, Sivertson decided to fire short side instead and buried his 11th of the year.

Just 14 seconds later, the Raiders forecheck went to work and scored another goal on a turnover. Ethan Bibeau didn’t get an assist on the play but his check behind the net helped Owen Corkish free the puck below the goal line, and he found Oli Chenier streaking in who blasted in a onetimer for his third of the year at 12:39.

On the final powerplay of the game, the Raiders scored again at the 18:46 mark. After a failed onetimer at the blueline, the puck skittered into a crowded slot and Jonah Sivertson battled for it. The moment he found it, Sivertson fired for his second of the game and 12th of the year.

FINAL Raiders 8 – 0 Broncos, shots 19-4 Raiders, 48-12 Raiders overall

With the 12 save night, Steele Bass was tested a few times in his first career WHL shutout. This is the third time this season the Raiders have shutout the Broncos, and Bass is the third goalie to do it for the Raiders. Michal Orsulak did on October 24, and Dimitri Fortin did in Swift Current on October 25.

Daxon Rudolph’s goal extends his point streak out to 10 games, with 10G-7A in that time. His 17 goals on the season leads the Raiders in goals, and has him tied amongst defenceman in the league with Medicine Hat Tigers defenceman Jonas Woo. Rudolph is 10 goals behind another Tigers defenceman in Bryce Pickford.

With a goal and three assists on the night, Justice Christensen earned his first four point night of his career. He had come into the game with a point per game in the last four, now bringing him to 4G-4A in his last five games.

The Raiders have now won three straight with two wins over the Broncos and the other over the Kelowna Rockets. In those three games, the Raiders powerplay is 11/18 or 61%, and the Raiders have outscored their opponents 25-4.

As the Raiders cross the halfway point of the season, they regain their one point lead at the top of the Eastern Conference over the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Raiders now wait until Friday when they will play their first game of the new year when they host the Regina Pats.
