Raiders open 3-in-3 with solid showing in Swift Current

After a busy Alberta road swing last week, the Prince Albert Raiders started their second consecutive three games in three nights stretch in Swift Current against the Broncos in their Teddy Bear Toss night. The Raiders took their foot off the gas a little bit in the third, but they still came away with a 7-4 win.

To open the scoring, the Raiders got things rolling on the forecheck. Maddix McCagherty found the puck low and played it back to the right point for Brock Cripps. He then returned the puck to McCagherty in the corner, but now he had Owen Corkish open on the right side of the slot, and Corkish onetimed home his sixth of the season at 4:45.

Then at 13:23, the Raiders scored again. Jonah Sivertson helped work the puck ahead for McCagherty, and McCagherty carried the puck into the right side corner. Everyone on the ice rushed into the zone towards the net, but McCagherty instead found Benett Kelly trailing in at the point, and Kelly blasted a onetimer through traffic for his second of the year.

After 1: Raiders 2 – 0 Broncos, shots 12-7 Raiders

The second period was one of the strongest defensive periods the Raiders played all season. Still, they found offence that started with Aiden Oiring stealing the puck in his own zone and working out the left side towards centre. Oiring got into a good shooting position in the middle of the slot, but he noticed Max Heise to his right with a more open look. Oiring fed Heise, and Heise ripped his 14th of the season under the bar far side at 10:56.

Then at 13:16, the Raiders scored again. This time Ethan Bibeau helped free the puck up for last minute call-up Malaki Martin in the corner, and Martin fed the puck back for Daxon Rudolph at the right point. Rudolph took some heat off the onetimer to make sure it found its way on goal, and he snuck the shot around the defenders short side for his 11th of the season.

Rudolph was also given an interference penalty late for defending his goaltender, and the Broncos scored shortly after to send the bears flying. At 19:27, Hudson Darby won the faceoff back to the point for Noah Kosick, and he found a backdoor feed to Parker Rondeau to tip it in.

After 2: Raiders 4 – 1 Broncos, shots 10-5 Raiders, 22-12 Raiders overall

At 3:28, the Raiders scored again. This time it was Benett Kelly and Linden Burrett picking up assists as they helped work the puck out of their zone for Owen Corkish down the left wall. Corkish made a great move around a defender to open up space, then make a slick move to change the angle of his shot and fire it in for his second of the game.

Then at 5:23, the Raiders top unit went to work. Aiden Oiring got the puck in the middle and sent it to the left for Max Heise, and Heise sent a hard pass across the crease for Brayden Dube streaking in to tip home his 10th of the season.

At the 9:02 mark though, the Broncos found a goal and started to find some momentum. Trae Wilke barely managed to leave the zone and avoid a hit from Justice Christensen, and that created a 3-on-1. Wilke fed Anthony Wilson in the middle, and he returned it right back to Wilke who blasted it in.

At the 12:14 mark, the Broncos scored again. This time Jaxen Gauchier snuck past the Raider defence for a breakaway, and Gauchier managed to make a move to his forehand to cut the lead in half.

Then at the 18:22 mark, the Broncos scored again on the powerplay. This time a shot was blocked in front and it came to the left point, and Trae Wilke found it before anyone else and wired another slapshot into the goal for his second of the game.

The Broncos thought they had some life and pulled the goaltender, but Max Heise helped take the puck away and find Daxon Rudolph. He sent the puck down the ice and just missed the goal, but Aiden Oiring followed up to beat the icing and swat the puck into the empty net for his 11th of the season at 19:26.

FINAL: Raiders 7 – 4 Broncos, shots 16-11 Raiders, 38-23 Raiders overall

Although he didn’t score, Maddix McCagherty earned two assists on the night to continue his hot streak since joining the Raiders. McCagherty has the longest active point streak in the league right now at 11 games, including a point against the Raiders as a member of the Wenatchee Wild. In that time, he has 6G-10A-16P, including 3G-3A-6P in his four games as a Raider.

Owen Corkish earned his first two goal night as a Raider. He was the only Raider with two goals on the night. With six different goal scorers on seven goals, 12 different Raiders picked up a point in the win.

The Raiders return home Saturday night to finally play in their own Teddy Bear Toss game against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
