“Those members now have more than a year of experience as MLAs and with today's changes, one-third of cabinet will be new members. That will give our government a strong balance of experience and fresh perspectives,” Scott Moe said in a statement. (980 CJME file photo)

Premier Scott Moe adds five newly elected MLAs to Saskatchewan cabinet in shuffle

Dec 11, 2025 | 12:25 PM

Premier Scott Moe shuffled his cabinet on Thursday, with five MLAs who were first elected last year taking on ministerial portfolios for the first time.

Mike Weger (Weyburn-Bengough) will serve as minister of community safety in a portfoilio previously known as corrections, policing and public safety, taking over for Tim McLeod. Chris Beaudry (Kelvington-Wadena) will take over the Ministry of Energy and Resources, which was previously headed by Colleen Young.

Darlene Rowden (Batoche) will serve as Saskatchewan’s environment minister, taking over from Travis Keisig. Kim Gartner (Kindersley-Biggar) will head the Ministry of Highways, taking over for David Marit, and Sean Wilson (Canora-Pelly) will serve as minister for SaskBuilds & Procurement, taking on a role that was also previously held by Marit.

Moe said he didn’t want to move too quickly by assigning major portfolios to brand-new MLAs immediately after last year’s vote.

“Nearly half of our government caucus was first elected in 2024, but I didn’t want to bring too many brand new members into cabinet right after the election,” Moe said in a statement.

“Those members now have more than a year of experience as MLAs and with today’s changes, one-third of cabinet will be new members. That will give our government a strong balance of experience and fresh perspectives.”

Meanwhile, four ministers are staying in cabinet, but with new responsibilities.

Marit will serve as minister of agriculture and minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation. Ken Cheveldayoff will stay on as minister of advanced education, but will also take on the portfolio for labour relations and workplace safety. Eric Schmalz will remain minister of government relations and minister responsible for First Nations, Métis and northern affairs, while also taking on the immigration and career training portfolio. Warren Kaeding will serve as minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, while keeping the trade and export development portfolio.

Ministers staying in their current roles include Jim Reiter (deputy premier and finance), McLeod (justice), Lori Carr (mental health and addictions, seniors and rural and remote health), Jeremy Cockrill (health), Everett Hindley (education), Jeremy Harrison (Crown Investments Corporation, Public Service Commission, Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan), Terry Jenson (social services) and Alana Ross (parks, culture and sport, Tourism Saskatchewan and status of women).

Departing from cabinet are Young, Keisig and Daryl Harrison. Moe thanked them for their service in cabinet and noted that they are expected to continue to “play vital roles within government.”

Moe also named eight legislative secretaries on Thursday: James Thorsteinson (agriculture), Keisig (Crown Investments Corporation), Blaine McLeod (community safety), Barret Kropf (education), Kevin Weedmark (health), Megan Patterson (social services), Brad Crassweller (parks, culture and sport and Saskatchewan-India relations) and Jamie Martens (trade and export development, Saskatchewan-Ukraine relations).

Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre swore in the new cabinet members on Thursday, the provincial government noted.
