It’s fall and there’s a lot of geese on the move, but one flock in particular is headed straight for the Art Hauser Centre.

On Nov. 29, the Prince Albert Raiders team will replace its traditional jerseys with the Lake Country Cobra Chickens, marking the third annual return of the wildly popular one-night-only rebrand.

“It’s just something that teams have decided to have a little bit of fun with. And, at the end of the day, we’re in the entertainment industry and we want people to come out and they’ve chosen to support junior hockey for multiple reasons, but one of them is entertainment and that’s what we’re hoping people take out of it is a lot of fun at our games,” said Raiders business manager, Mike Scissons.

The Raiders aren’t the only team to have had fun with some rebranding over the past few years. The Swift Current Broncos became the Swift Current Slough Sharks for one game, while the Brandon Wheat Kings turned into the Wheat City Walleye.

Scissons said when the Raiders came up with the Cobra Chickens alternate jersey three years ago, they never expected the fan support to be so positive.

“We liked it internally, but we’re sometimes blinded by bias. It wasn’t until we put it out that we saw the immediate response.”

And that response had merchandise flying off the shelves.

Scissons said this year’s jerseys will look a little different. While the logo featuring that aggressive goose energy remains the same, the team teased a bit more beige-colouring in the jersey, which also has some fresh striping.

“We always carry some Cobra Chickens clothing in the store,” said Scissons. We have replica jerseys arriving that week of the game and then we’ve got orange hunting toques with the Cobra Chicken logo on it, and hoodies…lots of stuff.”

The game jerseys will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the Raiders Education Fund. Scissons said those tend to go fast, since there are limited numbers.

The Cobra Chickens will be ready to prove they’re not sitting ducks on Nov. 29 when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers.
