St. Mary gearing up to host provincial volleyball championship

Nov 13, 2025 | 1:43 PM

The best of the best in high school boys volleyball will descend on Prince Albert this weekend for the 5A Boys Provincial Volleyball Championship.

St. Mary is set to host this years tournament and are looking to get back on to the podium after failing to qualify for last year’s championship. Carlton, on the other hand, is looking to improve on last year’s result, when they captured bronze in Balgonie over Winston Knoll from Regina.

The last time St. Mary and Carlton made the boys provincial championships was just two years ago, when Carlton hosted the finals in 2023. The cross-town rivals met in the semi-finals that year which saw St. Mary prevail 2-0 (25-18, 25-17), advancing them to the finals, where the Marauders narrowly toppled Swift Current 2-1 (25-19, 22-25, 16-14) for the provincial championship.

Coincidentally, the St. Mary girls’ team also captured provincial gold in 2023 at St. Mary, also defeating Swift Current in the finals. However, in 2025, neither St. Mary nor Carlton qualified for provincials after failing to place top three in the regional tournament.

For the boys championships this weekend, play gets underway on Friday at noon with games being split between St. Mary and Prince Albert’s SaskPolytech campus. Along with St. Mary and Carlton, eight other schools from across the province will compete, including from Swift Current, Lloydminster, Estevan, Saskatoon (Aden Bowman, Holy Cross, Walter Murray), and Regina (LeBoldus, Miller).

St. Mary will kick off the tournament at 12 p.m. against Aden Bowman at St. Mary, while Carlton embarks on their run at 1 p.m. at SaskPolytech versus Lloydminster.

A full schedule for the boys tournament can be found here.

Meanwhile, the 5A Girls Provincial Volleyball Championship is happening at the same time in Lloydminster.
