Idle No More spreads message through music

Jan 25, 2013 | 11:22 AM

There have been rallies, slow-downs, even flash mobs, but a man from the Prince Albert area has found a creative new way to spread the message of the Idle No More Movement.

Kevin Joseph is involved in a project with a group of Canadian musicians. People can download an online album for free. The albums feature a group of songs written solely for the Idle No More Movement.

“It is grass roots; no one is getting paid. All these artists are giving up their time to support the movement,” said Joseph.

The first album was released in early January and featured 16 songs, including one by Holly McNarland. The second album features a song by Blue Rodeo.

“When you get Canadian legends like Blue Rodeo helping out with the cause, it is really overwhelming,” said Joseph, who added that they have been approached by more big names, but he was not yet ready to disclose who.

Joseph said he is quite amazed at how big the Idle No More movement has become. One of the online songs features a band from New Zealand. Joseph said he gets frustrating when the movement is portrayed only as an aboriginal issue.

“Half the artists who are giving their music to us to use are non-aboriginal people. That's why it has gone global, it's environmental issues, things that affect all of us,” said Joseph.

The songs are online at RPM.FM.
