Hungry robber receives nine-month jail sentence

Oct 1, 2025 | 11:56 AM

A man who robbed a Prince Albert convenience store and threatened the security officer with a knife, was homeless and had no food.

That’s according to discussion heard Wednesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court. Reginald Kerley, 35, received a nine-month jail sentence.

The offence occurred in the late evening hours of Sept. 23 at the Circle K in Carlton Court Plaza. Kerley left the store with sandwiches and chocolate bars.

The security officer he essentially told to stay out of his way, was not physically harmed.

Police used security footage of the incident and eye witness reports to build a description of the suspect. That lead to an attempted K9 track by a member of the Saskatchewan Conservation Officer Service, but that was unsuccessful.

While still on the search however, a police officer located a man fitting the description, and Kerley discarded the backpack before running from police. He was caught after a short foot pursuit. A small folding knife was also recovered.

Judge Daunt, who accepted the joint submission presented by lawyers, told Kerley robbery is a very serious offence but he was getting a break in part because of an early plea and a limited criminal record.

Daunt also acknowledged convenience stores like Circle K are open 24 hours a day and the people who work there put themselves at risk everyday.
