The wheels on the bus

Free transit for first day of school

Aug 29, 2025 | 6:00 AM

It’s often their first ‘big kid’ responsibility: taking the bus to school on their own.

While it can be exciting to ride with friends or have a bit of independence from parents, it can also be a little intimidating worrying about bus rules or missing a stop.

The City of Prince Albert is giving students of all ages the chance to try city transit for no cost while starting the school year. It will be free for everyone on the first day of school, Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Monthly bus passes are available for high school students at Carlton, St. Mary, Wesmor, and Prince Albert Collegiate Institute. New semester bus passes are also available for all post-secondary students at City Hall. Students attending Saskatchewan Polytechnic can also purchase their semester bus pass on site at their school’s technical building.

“The free transit day helps students get to school, purchase their passes, and get familiar with their routes,” said Charlene Tebbutt, community mobility coordinator for the City of Prince Albert. “We also encourage students and parents to subscribe to Transit News for updates on schedules and service changes.”

The city offered school zone safety reminders for drivers:

  • Obey the 30 km/h school zone speed limit.
  • Avoid U-turns in school zones.
  • Watch for pedestrians and stop at marked crosswalks.
  • Do not stop in no-parking or no-stopping zones, which are in place to maintain safe sightlines.

City buses can be tracked live through this website.
