Hildebrand earns shutout as Raiders win defensive battle in Regina

After picking up the win against at home against Moose Jaw on Friday to re-enter the top spot in the East Division, the Prince Albert Raiders went on the road Saturday to try and protect that spot against the Regina Pats. This one was a defensive battle from start to finish, but the Raiders would come away with a 3-0 win.

The first period saw no scoring at all, but Jackson Kostiuk had the best chance of the period when he got a pass at the goal line from Riley Boychuk, and Kostiuk made a great move towards the backhand as he went across the crease, but he was denied by Ewan Huet’s outstretched pad.

Each team had a powerplay in the first, and both were denied on the man advantage. The Raiders powerplay would go 0/3 on the night despite pouring on the shots, especially in their second powerplay later in the third period where the Raiders spent the entire two minutes in the offensive zone with one faceoff to break it up.

After 1: Raiders 0 – 0 Pats, shots 9-6 Raiders

Both teams would hit the post early in the second period with Tomas Mrsic hitting the iron for the Raiders from low in the slot. In front of Max Hildebrand, he was quietly making save after save as his defence did a great job clearing the front of the net and making sure he didn’t deal with many rebound chances.

The Raiders would finally get on the board when Niall Crocker worked the puck up the left wall for Rilen Kovacevic in the corner. He’d make a power move out towards the front of the goal and get a shot away, but Harrison Lodewyk found the rebound and found the back of the net for his 10th of the season at the 18:51 mark.

After 2: Raiders 2 – 0 Pats, shots 8-6 Pats, 15-14 Raiders overall

Just 3:19 into the second period, Mrsic would get his goal. After Aiden Oiring helped poke the puck loose for Mrsic up the left wall, Mrsic went down to the goal line and fired from an impossible angle, bouncing the puck off the inside of Huet’s fivehole and into the back of the net for Mrsic’s 32nd of the year.

The Pats would pull their goalie with three minutes left but would spend a lot of time fighting for the puck in their own zone. Eventually the Raiders would block a pass and Brayden Dube would take the puck out of the zone with Mrsic on a 2-on-0 breakaway. Mrsic and Dube exchanged the puck five times before Dube potted it into the empty goal for his 26th of the year.

In two games this weekend, Max Hildebrand only allowed one goal and stopped 52/53 shots faced for a 0.981 save percentage. His third shutout of the season and his 28th win have him second in the league in both categories, and his save percentage of 0.917 is the top in the league with the second place spot sitting at 0.910.

The Raiders are off until Wednesday when they take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the
