Local charity startup looking for ‘100 Women Who Care’

It is a simple and efficient approach to group philanthropy: 100 women commit to $100 charity donations four times a year, ultimately leading to four different organizations receiving $10,000 each.

Patricia Cresswell Hughes and Tracy Feher co-launched a Prince Albert chapter of ‘100 Women Who Care’ on Tuesday and within 24 hours, already had 60 women sign up as members.

“We are both very committed to the non-profit world. We think that being good corporate citizens of Prince Albert means supporting charities and the non-profit community,” Fehr said. “This collective is just so much bigger and impactful than the individual.”

Yet, the commitment isn’t overwhelming. The group only meets four times a year for one hour.

“During that meeting, we will have three local charities make a presentation to us. We will then vote as individuals for the charity we decide to support. Collectively, we then donate $10,000 to that organization,” Hughes said.

The idea stems from a group called ‘100 Men Who Give a Damn’ that practices the same philanthropy. All of the funds raised are directed to the local charity; there are no admin costs, but the group sometimes seeks sponsorships.

Feher and Hughes said ‘100 Women Who Care’ is for those who want to make a big difference in their community without making a big time commitment. It’s also an opportunity to meet other women in a social environment.

Tisdale recently launched its own branch, but the group is well established elsewhere in the province including North Battleford where the Humane Society, Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre and the food bank have all benefited from donations in the past.
