Air Ronge woman receives six month sentence after stealing and crashing delivery driver’s car

A woman who, after stealing a vehicle left running outside a Prince Albert restaurant was involved in a crash, has received six months jail and a two-year driving prohibition.

Verna Ross, 28, was sentenced on Jan. 13 at Prince Albert Provincial Court. Guilty pleas were entered to vehicle theft, dangerous driving, and failing to comply with a previous probation order.

On Dec. 18, 2024, Prince Albert Police responded to a two-vehicle collision in the 3500 Block of 2nd Avenue West, and learned that one of the vehicles involved had just been stolen.

The owner, a Skip the Dishes driver, had walked into a business to pick up an order, when Ross got in and took it.

She drove off at a high speed but soon after collided with another vehicle. The vehicle’s owner, who had given chase, caught up with her when she attempted to run from the scene, and held her until police arrived.

All four occupants of the second vehicle were transported to hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening.

Verna Ross also received a 60-day sentence for a separate breach charged that dated back to last August.

With credit time for time spent in pre-sentence custody, she has just over six months left to serve.
