The Prince Albert Police Service has closed their investigation into the death of a 30-year-old former inmate from Pine Grove Correctional Centre.

The woman passed away in Victoria Hospital on April 13, 2024, almost three weeks after she was transported to hospital from the women’s correctional facility.

Police started investigating four days after the woman passed away after being notified by the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service of her passing.

Her name and her illness have not been released publicly, but police shared that she had been arrested on March 17 by Saskatoon and Corman Park police services.

Her charges included dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evading and multiple gun offences.

After being taken to Victoria Hospital from Pine Grove, she was transferred to Saskatoon.

When paNOW first learned about the situation, inmates who were close her said she was sick when she came in and staff had designated her as a withdrawing addict.

Her criminal charges were stay on April 1, 2024.

PA Police said their investigation was thorough and that no criminal charges are being recommended at this time.

“We recognize that this tragic loss has a profound impact on the woman’s family and loved ones, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. The Prince Albert Police Service remains committed to ensuring that all investigations are conducted with the utmost care and diligence,” they said in an emailed news release on Dec. 19.
