Prince Albert mom crowned Mrs. Canada

Prince Albert’s Jasmine Esquivel has a few titles: mother, successful sales rep, and now Mrs. Canada.

The 43-year-old travelled to Vancouver last weekend for the national pageant and returned home with a crown. The event, which included an evening gown competition and a panel interview, marked her first time competing at a pageant in almost 30 years.

“I tell my kids that being a mother is not the end of your journey, it is not the end of your dreams. This is just a beginning,” she said, adding her children have also been her biggest supporters.

Esquivel’s last time on stage was she was 17 and living in the Philippines. When asked why she decided to compete again, and how she became involved, she explained it all started with an online ad.

“My friends and I saw an advertisement that said they were looking for candidates for Mrs. Canada, and then my friend said, ‘Hey Jasmine, why don’t you try?'”

After applying, and admitting she had low expectations, Esquivel nailed her online interview and was later informed by email she was officially a candidate. As part of the process, she was asked about her advocacy and community involvement.

“My advocacy and my platform are youth empowerment and the role of a strong support system.”

After learning she was a candidate, Esquivel, who also works full time as a sales rep at Evergreen Nissan, started fundraising with a fun run and also volunteered in care homes.

Her days on stage are not done, and she will now represent Canada at an international competition in October in Sri Lanka. Acknowledging beauty pageants have received some criticism, she stated her belief that pageants can serve a supportive purpose for mothers like herself.

“I think it’s positive because it gives inspiration. Women sometimes think that after having kids, their lives end with being a mom.”

When asked about the competition, Esquivel said all the competitors were very supportive of one another and sportsmanlike.

“They’re just enjoying it. They love their prestigious experience.”
