Weekend rink report: Mintos split in Swift Current, Northern Bears swept by Battlefords

Dec 1, 2024 | 5:58 PM

It was another busy weekend on the ice for Prince Albert and area based hockey teams.

Here’s how they all faired in their matchups:

Mintos split set against Legionnaires

The Prince Albert Mintos were down in Swift Current this weekend, kicking off their season series against the Legionnaires at the InnovationPlex.

Game one on Saturday night saw a nearly scoreless opening period but Liam Myhre had other plans, scoring his first AAA goal with five seconds left on the clock.

The Mintos kept rolling into the second where Jordon Abrametz doubled the lead, and snapped a seven game pointless streak just over six minutes in. Later, Myhre found the back of the net again for his second of the night to make it 3-0.

However, the shutout bid was broken shortly after with Wesley Olson tickling twine to round out the second period.

In the third, it was all gas for P.A. Kanyan Unger potted one shorthanded, Lincoln Rogers netted his 11th of the campaign, and Connor Howe converted on the powerplay, making it three unanswered and extending their lead to five with less than five to play.

The Legionnaires would get one back, as penalty trouble for the Mintos saw Trae Peterson score on the ensuing man advantage. The effort came too late though, as the Green and Gold took game one commandingly, 6-2.

Jayden Blanchette picked up the win in net, stopping 31 of 33 shots.

Game two was a much different story for the Mintos who saw the home team return the favour.

Sunday afternoon began on the upside for P.A. as Luke Senick got the party started just 40 seconds in.

Less than two minutes later, penalties plagued the Mintos as Olson scored to tie it on the power play before Jake Hargrave scored again on the man advantage four minutes after that to give Swift Current a 2-1 lead. Less than two minutes after Hargrave’s goal, Jackson Fox extended the lead.

Prince Albert would get the last laugh of the period with Landin Frank helping cut into the lead, as it was 3-1 Legionnaires entering the second.

There, even more penalties would prove costly for the Mintos. Sam Kirwan and Connor Rieger both managed to score on two separate powerplay’s, while Peterson added salt to the wound with his second of the weekend just before the buzzer as Swift Current carried a 6-2 lead into the third.

It wasn’t much brighter for P.A. in the final frame as Peterson scored again and Kasey Gleim added another, making it 8-2. The Mintos did end on a good note, however, with Brock Kolibab and Senick lighting the lamp in the back half of the period as they dropped game two, 8-4.

Josh Henry stood in goal the whole sixty minutes on Sunday, turning aside 23 shots and taking the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game two)

Following the weekend, the Mintos are third in league standings with a 14-5-2 (W-L-OTL) record.

Prince Albert is back in action on Saturday when they kick off a two-game series against the Moose Jaw WINMAR Warriors at the Art Hauser Centre.

Sharks take a bite out of the Northern Bears

The Battlefords Sharks proved why they’re number one in the standings this past weekend, sweeping the Mann-Northway Northern Bears in their two-game set at the Art Hauser Centre.

Game one began on the right foot for Prince Albert, with Aliya Clarke getting the Bears on the board late in the opening frame. However, the lead would not last long as Samarah Riou tied it less than 90 seconds later.

It stayed that way for the opening moments of the second period until Sarah McNabb broke the tie three minutes in to give the Battlefords their first lead of the game.

That lead would be the only lead they had as the Sharks kept finding twine. Makayla Drabyk managed to score before the end of the second, while Kahli Keen and Danika Dureau tallied two more markers in the third as Battlefords handedly took Saturday’s matchup, 5-1.

Annika Neufeldt took the loss between the pipes, making 30 saves in the effort.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game one)

Game two on Sunday afternoon saw the Sharks build themselves a lead early in the first.

Less than seven minutes in, Dureau and Keen scored 90 seconds apart before the lamps when dark for quite some time.

It wasn’t until there was 6:20 remaining in the second that another goal was scored which saw the Northern Bears strike back. Mikiya Anderson netted her team leading fourth of the season while on the powerplay to cut into the lead.

However, Battlefords was quick to restore their two-goal lead as Dureau netted her second of the afternoon in the dying seconds of the frame.

Now 3-1 in the third, Drabyk added one more insurance marker for the Sharks as they held off the Bears for the sweep, winning 4-1 in game two.

Nikita Krayetski got the nod on Sunday, saving 37 of 41 shots in the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (game two)

P.A. is now 3-7-0-1 (W-L-OTW-OTL) on the campaign.
