Raiders and Chiefs battle it out in low scoring affair

For the second game in a row, the Prince Albert Raiders played host to an American team when they welcomed the Spokane Chiefs to the Art Hauser Centre on Wednesday night.

Despite the close game and another stellar game in net for Max Hildebrand, the Raiders would fall 2-0 after a late empty netter.

The festivities started early in the first period when Doogan Pederson dropped the gloves for the first of two fights during the game. Ten minutes into the game, Chiefs forward Matthew Edwards caught Pederson up high off a faceoff, and the two dropped the gloves at centre ice where Pederson landed the majority of the punches thrown.

The Raiders had two powerplays in the first period, the first coming just two minutes in, and another five minute major after Saige Weinstein cross checked Oli Chenier in the face. The Raiders generated shots on both powerplays, but the Chiefs fended them off.

The highlight of the period came again from Max Hildebrand on a cross-ice one-timer where, already pushing across the ice in the full splits, he extended the glove to snap the puck back down.

After 1: Raiders 0 – 0 Chiefs, shots 11-9 Raiders

The second period started with some four-on-four after a late first period scrum put Harrison Lodewyk in the box with Chase Harrington.

Another Raider powerplay would come and go, and while the Raiders were able to get shots away once they were set up in the zone, the Chiefs were aggressive in the pressure they put on the Raiders on the blueline and at centre ice, making it hard for the Raiders to re-enter the zone.

At the 15:52 mark, the Chiefs scored when Brayden Crampton put a puck to the net from the right side point, and the rebound popped out to Brody Gillespie who tucked the rebound home for his first in the WHL. After the goal came the game’s second fight between Harrison Lodewyk and Hayden Paupanekis where both men threw a few punches before they took each other down to the ice.

After 2: Raiders 0 – 1 Chiefs, shots 23-6 Chiefs

The third period was much better for the Raiders, but still they couldn’t solve Dawson Cowan in net.

His best two saves of the game came on back-to-back faceoffs in the third period where he stopped a cross ice feed from Luke Moroz to Oli Chenier for the one-timer and a play in tight from Brayden Dube.

With Hildebrand pulled from the Raiders net, they would win the offensive zone draw but wouldn’t get a chance to put the puck on net, and the Chiefs would take it out to centre where Owen Martin would hit the empty net at 19:23.

FINAL: Raiders 0 – 2 Chiefs, shots 14-10 Chiefs, 46-27 Chiefs overall

The Raiders are back in action on Saturday when Prince Albert kicks off their five game road swing through British Columbia against the Prince George Cougars.
