P.A. bodybuilder punches ticket to Nationals

Sep 23, 2024 | 3:41 PM

Prince Albert’s Lisa Gyoerick is less than two weeks away from competing at her first ever Canadian National Pro Qualifier.

She punched her ticket after competing at the recent Golden Prairie Cup in Saskatoon and finishing first in both Bikini Class A and Masters 35.

“This was my first time competing at The Golden Prairie Cup, and it was an incredible experience. The promoters did an amazing job creating a community atmosphere that was both welcoming and fun. The last show I competed in was back in 2020 in Winnipeg. I took a break from the stage to have my two babies, so this year was my “comeback,” she said.

The sport of bodybuilding requires a tremendous amount of discipline and dedication, and addition to a strict health and fitness routine, Gyoerick is a dedicated mother with two young children and also runs Bodhi Spa in Prince Albert.

Noting a personal desire to return to the sport after having kids, Gyoerick said competing this year was especially meaningful.

“My passion for the sport runs deep, but there was definitely some fear about stepping back on stage after a long break. I truly believe that the thing you want to do, but have no idea why you want to do it or how you’re going to do it, but continue to think about it everyday – is the thing you’re supposed to be doing. That is the purest form of passion. So even on the hard days, there isn’t anything else I would rather be doing – other than spending more time with my fiancé and kiddos.”

While Gyoerick has been working out for as long as she can remember, her more serious training started around seven or eight years ago. When asked if she made any changes to her training regimen, Gyoerick replied the biggest change was scheduling. Prior to having kids, she had the freedom to work out at any time of day.

“I train early before the kids wake up and before my fiancé has to head to work. On the days when the kids wake up early too, I’m fortunate to have an incredibly supportive partner, who doesn’t hesitate to get up with them so I can stick to my training schedule. It’s a real team effort to get me to the stage.”
