Offensive Kijiji ad from Swift Current pulled from website

It began just as a normal online posting for a room for rent might. It was for a home with two bedrooms available for rent in Swift Current near the Chinook Golf Course: no pets or parties allowed, wi-fi internet included, and smoking allowed but only outside. But the ad ended in a way you'd never expect and would likely be offended by.

A would-be landlord used the n-word and f-word to discriminate against race and sexual orientation.

“Normally, this ad would never see the light of day on Kijiji,” said Shawn McIntyre, Community Relations Manager with Kijiji Canada.

“Anything that has this type of offensive language is removed from the site almost immediately,” he said.

That was exactly the case. About an hour after News Talk Radio contacted a representative from Kijiji for an interview, the posting was removed.

But how did it even make it on to the website to begin with?

McIntyre says Kijiji has a “robust” filtering system on its website that filters out offensive language like this. He says somehow this ad still made it on to the site. Now, he says they'll try to find out what happened.

“It's a great learning tool for us, although it's unfortunate that the ad did get through,” he said. “It allows us to review what might have happened and definitely prevent it in the future.”

McIntyre added that the failsafe in cases like this is having staff to take calls and deal with flagged ads.

In the meantime, McIntyre says this person has been banned from using the site to post rental ads, or any other kind of ad in the future. But will that stop him or her from creating a new user name and getting back on the website?

“There's a number of ways they could try to get past our filters,” McIntyre said, “but we do have a number of ways to block users, both from their email addresses and their locations.”

“We will take measures to try to make sure that this person does not get back on our website,” he said.
