Tough Enough champ gets ready to rumble again

After a near 11 year hiatus, Prince Albert’s Patrick Turner is making his return to the cage.

The 33-year-old has signed a contract to fight at next month’s Rumble In The Cage event in Lethbridge. He told paNOW he felt the urge to put the gloves back on after training with another well respected local fighter Ryan Rohovich, as well as cornering for his cousin Caleb Ermine.

“And losing a couple family members who were big fight fans too who used to be in my corner, kinda pushed me back,” he said.

Turner’s opponent next month is Terell Jonasson from Athabasca, Alberta and as an amateur he has a record of 2-2. His last fight was in March.

“We will watch tape on him and I’m pretty confident I will win this fight,” Turner said, adding he is working hard on both his striking and his grappling.

Turner’s own record as an amateur is 1-2 and he is also a two time winner of the Tough Enough boxing competitions that were once held in Prince Albert. Preparation for this fight though will be very different as he is cutting weight down to 195 pounds and he will also be coached by a man whose record speaks for itself.

Lucian Phillips has black belts in both Taekwon Do and jiu-jitsu and is the head instructor at North Wake Martial Arts. He also has over 20 years of international competition and coaching experience for martial arts.

“I always enjoy having guys come in and train and compete; it’s kind of what we do so when a new guy comes in, wants to give it a shot and give it a go, of course I”m gonna be supportive and help him out as best as I can,” Phillips said.

Next month’s event will take place at the Lethbridge Servus Sports Centre, and will include both MMA and bare knuckle fighting. The event will also be shown on pay-per-view.
