P.A. teen qualifies to ride bulls in Wyoming

One Prince Albert area teen is working on his mental and physical game as he gets ready to put spur to leather south of the border.

Chase Skene, age 16, said he is focused on doing the best he can at the 2024 National High School Finals rodeo that starts July 14.

“Well, I usually just get on the the practice dummy out at home and think about what’s going to happen. Mentally prepare myself,” he said.

That event will have high school aged athletes from Canada, the US, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia competing.

This is just a step on the road to the rest of Chase’s dreams. He is hoping to do well enough at rodeo to get a rodeo scholarship for university in the US.

That means taking steps to maintain his physical fitness – like working out regularly.

Rodeo as a way of life is not new to Chase. His mother is a barrel racer and his three older brothers all rodeoed as well. His dad was an accomplished softball player.

“We had friends and family that rodeoed so we wanted to try it as young kids,” he said. “My three older brothers kind of got into it at first and I followed their path.”

He also competes in tie down and team roping but likes bull riding better.

“I like it because it’s more fun than you know. There’s more adrenaline rush.”
