Guilty plea entered in Prince Albert area manslaughter case

Jun 25, 2024 | 5:00 PM

A little more than a year after a man was found dead at a home west of Prince Albert, a guilty plea has been entered to a charge of manslaughter.

Justin William Madden, 41, appeared by video when the case was discussed Tuesday afternoon at Court of King’s Bench.

A pre-sentence report, which will canvass Madden’s personal history and assist Justice Mills with the final decision, was ordered and the case adjourned to Sept. 11.

On June 4, 2023, Prince Albert RCMP received a request to conduct a welfare check on a man at a home on Oxbow Street. Frank Lund, 78, was found deceased and through their investigation, police determined the death was suspicious.

RCMP have indicated the victim and the accused are known to one another, but there’s been no further information provided.

Madden had initially been charged with second degree murder and prior to Tuesday’s brief hearing, was to be tried by judge and jury.

The facts of the case will be read at the next hearing and Madden’s lawyer Brian Pfefferle informed Justice R.C. Wempe, a joint submission was being prepared. He also noted his client, had never before faced as serious a charge.

Frank Lund was a long-time firefighter for the Prince Albert Fire Department, serving from 1967 to 1992.

Five days after the tragic discovery, RCMP were called back to the same residence to investigate a break-and-enter.
