Elementary school gets $20K grant for new books

More books are coming to Osborne Public School after the school received a $20,000 grant through Indigo Books and the Love of Reading Foundation.

The K-8 school, located just south of Prince Albert, is one of only about 30 schools across Canada to receive the money.

Osborne Principal Dejan Letkeman said his school has about 100 students, many of whom come from diverse backgrounds.

“Our literature collection at the school was dated and we really wanted to update it for two reasons,” Letkeman said. One, to update our collection so that we can continue to move literacy forward in our school, as well as for our diverse student population to see themselves in our collection of literature, both in the classroom and in the library and in the school.”

The school found out they had won the grant in early May and then announced it on June 3.

Letkeman said they’re making an effort to attain books that are suited towards students that have English as a second language.

“We’re looking for ways to not only address the linguistic piece, but also the cultural piece as well, and so it’s an ongoing research piece for us as we begin to utilize the money and the funds,” he said.

Letkeman added that each student will have a Indigo wish list of 10-12 book titles that they’ll be able to submit to their school librarian, plus other activities and contests.

“Different ways that we’re going to invite student voices into the selection of the literature that comes about from this grant,” he said.

Indigo is also offering a 30 per cent off deal for all purchases that the school makes, making the final total closer to $25,000. The grant will last over the next three years.
