Prince Albert chess player makes big moves at Nationals

While he’s only 13 years old, and has less than five years of experience, Prince Albert’s Eros Villamar has played and beaten some of the best chess players in the country.

Earlier this month, the Grade 7 student at Holy Cross School travelled to New Brunswick and competed at Nationals. After points were tabulated, Villamar, along with heavy favourite players from Ontario and Quebec, finished in a three-way stalemate. A tiebreaker playoff resulted in Villamar finishing third.

“When I played in the Canadian Chess Challenge I enjoyed every game but my favourite part is the last game against New Brunswick. I’m in a must win situation to secure a place in the podium. I was excited, energetic and focused and easily beat my opponent,” he said. “I’m happy to bring a trophy to Prince Albert.”

Since joining the chess club three years ago, Villamar has competed at over 30 tournaments and travelled all over the country. While at home, he estimated he spends about two hours each day playing his favourite game.

When asked what he enjoys most about chess, Villamar said he likes that he can travel to different places with his family, join tournaments, meet and play with different players and make friends and socialize with them.

“My favourite person to play with is my grandfather. He is a good player. He is the first person to help me develop my game,” he said.

When asked about a dream match, Villamar commented his goal is to play in the World Championship against any Grandmaster (GM). Villamar’s father Julius said he enjoys watching his son play.

“I feel very proud and it feels amazing seeing my kids performing at the top level,” he said.
