Programs available for B.C. farmers to prepare for droughts

The B.C. government is bolstering supports to help farmers manage, collect and store water for crops and livestock.

The province has invested $80 million into the Agricultural Water Infrastructure Program that farmers can access to improve irrigation, and build infrastructure to improve water availability and storage.

Along with supporting food production, the province said the actions taken through the program would benefit stream flows and fish populations.

“Climate change is impacting both water and food security for people in British Columbia, making it challenging for farmers’ livelihoods and affecting local food systems,” Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food, said.

“This is why we’re providing enhanced support to improve on-farm and community water infrastructure so we can grow more food and ensure proper water management during potential floods and drought.”

The provincial funds build on a $20 million investment into the Agricultural Water Infrastructure Program in June of 2023, which funded 108 projects across the province including building agricultural dams and dugouts, and improving water-supply systems for irrigation and livestock.

“Last year, our province faced an unprecedented lack of rain, and this winter we’re seeing snow levels are at remarkable lows, meaning next summer might be even worse,” Premier David Eby said.

“Climate change – and drought in particular – makes it tough to secure water for animals, crops and feed, and it makes food more expensive for everyone. Our government heard the call for help from farmers. This money will help build water storage and buy the equipment farmers tell us they need to keep providing the food we all depend on.”

Farmers will be able to apply for the Agricultural Water Infrastructure Program in May.

Additionally, the province has invested $3 million into the Agricultural Water Management Workshops and Drought Management Engagement Sessions. These events allow farmers to learn about best practices and tools for water and irrigation use in during droughts.

One of those sessions will be held in Vernon on March 21, 2024. Anyone interested in attending can register with the North Okanagan Livestock Association by emailing nola.bccattle@gmail.com.
