The world’s largest junior high school rodeo will be held later this month in Oklahoma, and joining a team from Saskatchewan is a 13-year-old girl from Prince Albert.

Pepper Jackson has only been riding for about five years.

“I just always wanted horses and I begged my dad and he got me a horse one day and then I was just hooked ever since,” she said.

The National Junior High Finals Rodeo (NJHFR) runs from June 21 to 27 and will feature 1,200 contestants from 43 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, Australia, Guatemala, and Mexico.

The provincial qualifier was held last month in Swift Current, and Jackson had to finish in the top four in all the roping events. Acknowledging she has never been to nationals before, Jackson said she is feeling excited.

“Just being down there in itself will be really fun, and that I get to go down there with my own horse and my own partner makes it pretty special.”

In addition to competing for more than $80,000 in prizes, contestants will also compete for more than $200,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named a world champion. Chelsea Jackson is very proud of her daughter’s achievement.

“It’s a pretty cool experience to see your child achieve stuff like this. To see her hard work pay off is probably the best gift of all,” she said, adding the rodeo community feels like a family.

Alan Jackson acknowledged all the people who have helped his daughter.

“You know, a lot of people have to pay a lot of money to get coaching like that, and we have friends and neighbours who are just doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.”

Pepper’s team roping partner this past season has been Stran Muirhead (another local) and they will travel later together to Canadians in August and Pepper will be team roping with Trace Nixon at the Nationals.  Her ribbon roping partner is Coy Hamilton.

She acknowledged that one day she hopes to go pro and compete at the National Finals Rodeo.
