P.A. security company teaching seniors how to identify scams

A Prince Albert security company hopes to help seniors avoid becoming victims of scams.

Leo Ekhaguere, the president and CEO of Lions Security Incorporated (LSI), visited Points West Living on Tuesday where he shared tips on how to spot a ruse and report it.

He told paNOW that everyone is vulnerable to scammers, but seniors are specifically targeted.

“Most of our seniors, virtually all of them, are vulnerable to cyber criminals.”

One ruse that’s been unfortunately very successful is emergency-grandparent scams. A scammer will call seniors claiming to be a grandchild, family member, law enforcement officer, or lawyer and tell them a loved one needs money immediately.

Cassandra Bendig, general manager of Points West Living, explained she’s had one of her residents fall for a scam like this. She added another resident was also the victim of an online ruse.

“You wish you could do something more than you actually can to help them in those situations,” she said.

She said when LSI reached out to them about hosting a free meeting, she immediately jumped at the opportunity. Bendig believes talks like this will prevent any more of her residents from being scammed.

“They needed the information; it’s things they don’t recognize or don’t know what to watch for.”

While knowing what to look for was a key talking point, Ekhaguere was quick to mention they also focused on how to properly report a scam. He noted people should contact local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CASC). By doing this, they’re also preventing others from being victimized.

Ekhaguere added they hope to visit other senior homes and housing complexes. They also have plans to hold monthly meetings to educate anyone else who wants to learn more.

Representatives from LSI will be visiting the Prince Albert Public Library on Thursday at 1 p.m. where they plan on giving out pamphlets with information tips.
